This free 6th Grade Science activity explores the chemistry of life's energy, respiration, and how animals produce heat. Discover vital flames and ice…
Topic Snapshot: The Chemistry of Life's Energy
Before the late 1700s, people did not understand how animals stayed warm. Some believed a mysterious "vital flame" lived inside the heart. However, chemistry experiments changed this view by treating the body like a laboratory. Scientists discovered that breathing is actually a chemical reaction. They used tools like the ice calorimeter to measure the heat animals produce. This device proved that living creatures generate warmth by consuming oxygen from the air. This process is called respiration, and it works much like a burning candle. When animals breathe, they also release carbon dioxide as a waste product. These early experiments showed that food acts as fuel for our internal systems. Instead of magic, body heat comes from a slow, steady chemical burning process. This breakthrough helped us see the connection between the air we breathe and the energy we need to survive.

Reflection Question
The text explains that respiration is like a "slow, steady chemical burning process." Based on what you read, why is oxygen a necessary part of this process for living creatures?
