Activity: Technical Audit of a Viral Health Video
You are a member of the Fact-Check Collective, a group that reviews popular social media health claims. A viral video titled "Spit is Just Water" has reached millions of views across the internet. In the video, the creator claims that saliva serves no chemical purpose and is really just plain "spit-water" that helps you swallow dry foods like bread. Your job is to find out if this claim is fact or fiction. To investigate, your team has collected all the evidence you need on this worksheet: the Science Background in Part 1 , the Lab Test Results in Part 2 , and the Video Quotes in Part 3 .
Part 1: Science Background
Your body uses two main ways to break down the food you eat every day. One way is through physical digestion , which means chewing your food into smaller bits. The other way is through a chemical process. This process uses special proteins that act as helpers to change the way food is built. These proteins are called enzymes , and they help speed up the work your body does to get energy. In science, a chemical change occurs whenever a completely new substance is formed with different properties.
Inside your mouth, your spit contains a specific enzyme that starts working on foods like bread. Bread is full of starch, which is made of long chains of sugar. These long chains do not taste sweet at first. When you chew for a long time, the enzyme in your spit interacts with the starch . It breaks the long chains into tiny pieces of sugar. This change transforms the plain bread into something that tastes sweet before you even finish swallowing your meal.
If you did not have these enzymatic helpers , your body would have a hard time using the nutrients in your food. Your spit is much more than just a lubricant to help…
