Topic Snapshot: The Battle for the Microbiome
To stay healthy, your body relies on a massive community of microscopic organisms called the microbiome . When harmful bacteria invade and make you sick, doctors use medicines called antibiotics . There are different types of these medicines used for different situations. Narrow-spectrum antibiotics are like precision tools that target only a few specific types of germs. Broad-spectrum antibiotics are more like a wide net, killing a large variety of bacteria at once. Finally, synthetic antibiotics are entirely man-made in laboratories to fight specific infections.
However, bacteria are living things that can change. This leads to antibiotic resistance , where germs find ways to survive the medicine. Two major factors contribute to this problem. First, the overuse of medicine happens when antibiotics are taken for illnesses they cannot cure, like the common cold or the flu. Second, incomplete treatment occurs when a patient stops taking their medicine too early because they feel better, allowing the strongest bacteria to survive and multiply. To help the body after a course of antibiotics, many people use probiotic recovery . This method involves eating foods like yogurt or taking supplements that contain live, helpful bacteria to help rebuild the diversity of the internal "garden" and restore balance to the gut.
When a course of antibiotics is stopped too early, surviving bacteria that carry resistant traits no longer have to compete with other microbes for resources. These resilient bacteria quickly multiply and spread, making future infections much harder to treat with standard medicine. Additionally, because broad-spectrum drugs wipe out the beneficial bacteria that normally shield the intestinal walls, the gut is left…
