A 6th Grade Science activity on fact vs. opinion, exploring short-term physiological adjustments and evolutionary changes to high altitudes.
📋 Fact vs. Opinion Sort
Name: _________________________ Date: _____________
Topic: Evolutionary Changes vs. Short-Term Adjustments in High Altitudes
A FACT is a statement that can be proven true or false using evidence, data, or observation. An OPINION is a statement that expresses a personal belief, feeling, or judgment that cannot be proven.
When hikers travel from the beach to high mountains, their bodies go through fast changes to handle the thin air. This process is a short-term fix where the heart beats faster and the breathing rate increases. The body also starts making more red blood cells to help carry oxygen through the body. However, these quick changes are different from evolutionary changes. Deep changes in a group happen over thousands of years as special genes are passed down to children. Some groups living in high places have developed lasting traits that allow their bodies to use oxygen better. These adaptations are part of the group’s DNA and do not go away when a person visits low lands. While a hiker’s quick fix helps for a few weeks, true change is a lasting shift in the way a group of people stays alive.
Directions: Read each statement below. Write F for Fact or O for Opinion on the blank line.
1. _____ Evolutionary adaptations are much more interesting to study than short-term heart rate changes.
2. _____ Short-term adjustments include an increase in a hiker's breathing rate when they reach high altitudes.
3. _____ It is better to be a mountain climber than a hiker who stays on flat trails near the ocean.
4. _____ The body produces extra red blood cells as a temporary response to help transport oxygen.
5. _____ Evolutionary changes are permanent genetic traits passed down through many generations.
