The surface of human skin is naturally acidic, with a pH level typically between 4.5 and 5.5. Scientists call this thin, protective layer the acid mantle . This acidic environment is created when your sweat and natural oils, known as sebum, mix together on the skin's surface. The primary purpose of the acid mantle is to act as a chemical barrier that prevents harmful bacteria and fungi from growing on your body. While some people think skin should be "squeaky clean," using harsh soaps with a high alkaline pH can actually strip away this protective layer and leave the skin vulnerable to irritation. Your skin also hosts a collection of helpful organisms called the microbiome. One common resident is Staphylococcus epidermidis , which produces antimicrobial peptides to fight off dangerous pathogens. Having these bacteria on your skin does not mean you are dirty; instead, it means your body has a healthy defense system.
