These bacteria frequently generate corrosive acids following the consumption of sugary carbohydrates. One specific variety of bacterium is Streptococcus mutans . It represents the primary catalyst for tooth decay because the acidic byproduct it produces can significantly damage dental structures. Conversely, a beneficial microbe called Streptococcus salivarius resides predominantly on the surface of the tongue. This particular organism is advantageous because it promotes a balanced and healthy environment within the mouth.
