Microbial Mission: The Greenhouse Study
Scientists are currently investigating a specific strain of bacteria found in a community greenhouse. This bacterium, which they have labeled Strain Alpha-7 , was discovered growing on the roots of several vegetable plants. To determine if this bacterium is helpful or harmful to humans, the researchers conducted two separate tests. Read the laboratory reports below to analyze the behavior of Strain Alpha-7.
Lab Report A: Nutritional Analysis
Researchers placed Strain Alpha-7 into a sample of organic soy milk. Over a period of twelve hours, the bacteria performed a process called fermentation . During this chemical breakdown, the bacteria converted the sugars in the soy milk into vitamins B12 and K2. These vitamins are essential for human bone health and brain function. The resulting liquid was found to be safe for consumption and contained higher nutrient levels than the original soy milk.
Lab Report B: Human Cell Interaction
In a controlled environment, Strain Alpha-7 was introduced to healthy human intestinal cells. Observations showed that the bacteria did not attach to the cell walls or attempt to enter the cells. Instead, the bacteria produced a protective coating over the intestinal lining. This coating prevented pathogens (harmful organisms that cause disease) from reaching the healthy cells. No signs of redness, swelling, or cell damage were observed during the forty-eight-hour study period.
