This 6th Grade Science activity explores gut health and the microbiome, with students sorting facts vs. opinions about B. theta's digestive role.
📋 Fact vs. Opinion Sort
Name: _________________________ Date: _____________
Topic: Gut Health and the Science of Intestinal Bacteria
Before you begin the activity, read the following information about the microscopic world inside your body. You will use these facts to help you determine which statements are true and which are just someone's feelings.
The human digestive system serves as a biological habitat for a massive collection of microscopic organisms known as the gut microbiome. Scientific researchers estimate that an average adult carries approximately three to five pounds of bacteria within their intestinal tract. Interestingly, this total weight is roughly equivalent to the weight of a human brain. While many individuals assume all bacteria are harmful pathogens, most of these diverse species are actually beneficial to human survival. One specific bacterium, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron , produces specialized proteins called enzymes to break down tough plant fibers. Probiotics are living microorganisms found in fermented foods, like yogurt, that can provide significant health benefits when consumed in sufficient quantities. These helpful microbes facilitate efficient digestion and strengthen the body’s immune system. Maintaining a diverse population of these bacteria is a measurable indication of a healthy internal environment.
Instructions: A FACT is a statement that can be proven true or false using evidence, data, or observation. An OPINION is a statement that expresses a personal belief, feeling, or judgment that cannot be proven.
Read each statement below. Write F for Fact or O for Opinion on the blank line.
1. _____ The bacteria living in an adult's intestines weigh between three and five pounds.
