Antonie van Leeuwenhoek lived in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century, working as a simple merchant without a formal education. He used these lenses to create the most powerful magnifying tools of his era, allowing him to see clearly. These handheld devices were smaller than modern microscopes, yet they eventually revealed a secret universe no human had witnessed.
The microscopes Leeuwenhoek designed were unique because they used a high-quality lens mounted on a simple metal plate. To use one, he held the device close to his eye while facing a bright light to illuminate samples. His skill at shaping glass allowed him to achieve magnification levels far superior to those of other scientists.
